Well Video Surveys Well Videos are performed in both existing and new wells. A video log is often used to confirm the "as-built" construction of the well and to inspect for damage such as corrosion, casing breaks, holes, splits, and other deformities. Surveys are also performed to determine the source of sand or gravel entry or falling production rates. Video surveys are usually conducted prior to and after cleaning or repair operations to assess the effectiveness of the maintenance. Occasionally videos are used to aid in "fishing" operations for equipment that has fallen into the well. In open (hard-rock) boreholes a video survey can be used to locate fracture zones which may produce water. During a video survey the down-hole camera is lowered into the well and the image is observed on a video monitor and simultaneously recorded on VHS cassettes and DVD Discs. The camera depth is superimposed onto the video image and is also recorded. A written summary of the well condition is permanently archived. Well Development The importance of developing a newly constructed well is to repair damage done to the formation by the drilling operation and alter the basic physical characteristics of the aquifer near the borehole so that water will flow more freely to the well. On older wells development can be used to determine and enhance well performance and water quality. The procedure requires the well to be open and vacant of pump equipment. A high capacity pump is installed and powered by a portable diesel engine that can vary pumping rate and also surge the well. Flow rates are recorded as well as sand content and drawdown to calculate well yield and overall performance. Other methods that can be used to improve an older well include brushing, chemical treatment and high pressure jetting. Pump Efficiency Testing A pump efficiency test measures the various aspects of a pumping plant’s performance. The result of the test is an account of the overall efficiency of the pumping plant and the cost of operation under the testing condition. Durham Pump is a certified pump testing contractor participating in the California Pump Efficiency Program. Subsidized pump tests and repairs are available to qualified individuals and agencies. |
